General

How does limescale get into the tap water?
  • So-called hard, i.e. calciferous, water is the result of soft rainwater seeping through mineral-rich rock formations. The minerals calcium and magnesium carbonate leach into the water, which is thus "hardened". This hard water eventually becomes our tap water. Limescale deposits form when the tap water is heated or evaporates.
What can I expect from a good decalcifier?
  • Limescale deposits are dissolved by the acid components in the decalcifier. You can judge the intensity of this chemical reaction by the vigour of the bubbling action.
  • The effectiveness of a decalcifier is primarily dependent on its acid component. The ideal decalcifier ensures quick and thorough decalcification combined with optimum protection of the materials, if adequately dosed.
What's wrong with using vinegar or citric acid for decalcification jobs?
  • Using a citric acid-based decalcifier may cause precipitation and thus deposits that can prevent your household appliances from functioning properly, for example by clogging the fine lines and valves in coffee machines. The citric acid can also create an insoluble film that seals off the limescale deposits. Moreover, the decalcification process will take significantly longer with citric acid than with durgol.
  • The acetic acid and flavour additives in vinegar or vinegar essence produce an unpleasant odour during decalcification. A further problem is that the odour can be absorbed into plastic materials, an unwelcome side effect especially in food-related applications. Furthermore, certain plastics can be damaged by acetic acid. As with citric acid, decalcification takes significantly longer with vinegar than with durgol.

durgol® universal

How does durgol universal satisfy environmental protection requirements?
  • Thanks to its above-average limescale-dissolving action, durgol universal is economical to use and the low dosage means it is gentle on the environment.
  • durgol universal is environmentally compatible: during the reaction of the acid contained in the decalcifier with the limescale, the acid is neutralised via the formation of salts. Additionally, any unused acid helps neutralise the often excessive concentrations of lye (from laundry detergents) in waste water.
Why should I use durgol swiss espresso and not durgol universal for my coffee machine?
  • durgol universal is a universal decalcifier that can basically be used on all household items. You can certainly use durgol universal for (open-system) filter coffee machines. However, durgol swiss espresso was developed especially for modern premium (closed-system) coffee machines, with lower foaming than durgol universal. The limescale deposits are dissolved during the run through, in which foaming must be kept at a minimum to prevent excessive pressure from building up in the fine lines and valves.

durgol® swiss espresso®

Why do I need to decalcify my coffee machine at all?
We recommend you to decalcify your machine regularly and before limescale deposits might become a problem, ideally every three months.
=> For optimum coffee quality and a long machine life.

  • Limescale deposits in the machine lead to an extended brew-time, inhibit heat transfer and diminish the quality of your coffee.
  • Limescale deposits build up over time and can ultimately cause clogging. Limescale also accelerates corrosion of the materials inside the coffee machine. Both can damage your machine.
  • Limescale deposits increase energy consumption and therefore negatively impact the environment.

durgol® swiss steamer

Why do I need to decalcify my steamer at all?
We recommend you to decalcify your steamer regularly and before limescale deposits might become a problem.
=> For optimum results and a long appliance life.

  • Limescale deposits in the steamer reduce heat transfer and lengthen steaming times, which can diminish the quality of the food.
  • Limescale deposits build up over time in the steamer and can damage the heating element. Limescale also accelerates corrosion of the materials inside the steamer. Both can cause damage to the steamer.
  • Limescale deposits cause higher energy consumption and therefore negatively impact the environment
Can I use durgol universal to decalcify my steamer?
  • No. Use the special durgol swiss steamer decalcifier. Steamers require a dedicated decalcifier, one that is specifically formulated for use in these appliances. The special formula of durgol swiss steamer prevents (among other things) foaming that could damage your appliance.

durgol® swiss vapura

Which appliances can be decalcified with durgol swiss vapura?

Attention:
DO NOT decalcify simple steam irons with durgol swiss vapura.
Can I decalcify my steam station / ironing system or my steam cleaner with durgol universal?
  • No - only durgol swiss vapura has been developed especially to decalcify steam stations, ironing systems and steam cleaners. Its formula is especially designed for the requirements of these appliances and prevents the formation of foam, which could damage your appliance. This is not guaranteed with durgol universal.
